Friends of the San Francisco Estuary

Friends of the San Francisco Estuary is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organized by SFEP's Management Committee in May 1991 to build broad-based public support for Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) implementation. The CCMP assigns the following specific responsibilities to Friends:
  • Develop public involvement, education, communication, and advocacy programs.
  • Promote citizen involvement in studying, restoring and managing a healthy Estuary.
  • Develop and implement public education and involvement action plans.
  • Develop a flexible, community-based framework for public involvement and education in all aspects of Estuary management.
  • Serve as a watchdog and advocate for CCMP implementation
Specifically, Friends assists SFEP by:
  • promoting public review and involvement in overall CCMP implementation and decision-making
  • encouraging dialogue between public and private interests on restoration of the Estuary
  • sustaining public and political interest in CCMP implementation
  • monitoring and reporting on implementation results and performance of the CCMP
  • supporting the San Francisco Estuary Partnership's work programs and goals
  • providing environmental education activities to the public
  • participating in on-the-ground habitat restoration partnerships and assisting other environmental organizations by acting as a fiduciary agent.
  • providing fiscal support for the San Francisco Estuary Partnership's State of the Estuary Conference
  • presenting the CCMP Implementation Awards at the State of the Estuary Conference
  • helping sponsor ESTUARY NEWS and special inserts in the newsletter (see June 2006 and December 2006 issues)
  • assisting with publication of public education materials, erosion control booklet, "Start at the Source," Invasive Species materials, stream protection materials, and Safe Boating material

Other Accomplishments:
  • Sponsored Regional Sub-Committees for the Delta, North and South Bays focused on facilitating wetland restoration projects in the Estuary. The Delta In-Channel Island project was completed under this umbrella.
  • Participated in establishment of the Watershed Assessment Resolute Center, with Merrit College
  • Facilitated the development of an Alameda County Watershed Forum
  • Partnered with Golden Gate Audubon Society on the Eco Oakland Program to provide teacher training about the bay and watershed ecology, and habitat restoration including invasive plant eradication and native plant propagation at MLK Shoreline Park
  • Assisted with habitat enhancement and restoration along creeks adjacent to the City of Pleasanton and East Bay Regional Parks at Moller Ranch
  • Planted riparian trees on Suisun Creek
  • Presented, with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, a workshop on Wetland Restoration for Non-Profit Organizations
